Kim Jones’s 10 People To Meet: Gordon Flores
The print and embroidery work in the past few Louis Vuitton men’s collections has been astounding – and much of it down to Gordon Flores. From ribbon-like calligraphy spelling out the words Louis Vuitton to Jean Cocteau-inspired line drawings and beautiful Japanese woodblock- style motifs of birds of paradise. Originally from Los Angeles but now based in Paris, the illustrator and artist also counts fashion’s king of pop, Jeremy Scott, and cult-like streetwear brand Supreme as clients. Flores has an exhibition on the way, too – a multimedia installation that will explore themes ranging from “an apocalyptic World War III scenario to the supernatural”. Kim Jones is a fan and so are we.
Ted Stansfield: When and what was your first break?
Gordon Flores: “Working on a punk-influenced collection with Jeremy Scott in 2010.”
TS: Where’s your favourite place to work?
GF: “In my studio, surrounded by all my favourite things.”
TS: What’s the last thing you drew or designed?
GF: “I’ve just finished working on a project with Supreme and now I’m focusing on working on my upcoming exhibition.”
TS: What accomplishment are you most proud of?
GF: “Opening a magazine and seeing my work on its pages is still unbelievable for me.”
TS: What advice would you give to someone starting out in art or illustration?
GF: “Give people what they don’t know they want yet.”
TS: What does Louis Vuitton mean to you?
GF: “To work with a team that creates an inspiring environment and embraces modernity without losing sight of the brand’s heritage.”
TS: What is one thing that Kim Jones has taught you?
GF: “There are many things, but what stands out the most is the dedication towards research and the ability to translate this into a simple form that is relevant.”
TS: What do you do to relax?
GF: “I like to travel, but when I go to my hometown, Venice Beach, I like to swim in the ocean.”
TS: What’s your “out for a pint of milk” look?
GF: “Whatever I wake up in with some sliders.”
TS: Style is…
GF: “Dressing for yourself and feeling happy in what you’re wearing.”
Stay tuned for the rest of the 10…
