FROM THE VAULT (SUMMER 2011)
Emma Hill – The English Eccentric
When in the vicinity of Bond Street, and by that we mean anything within a, ouuu, twelve mile radius, we always make a brief detour to visit the Mulberry shop. We’ve taken to wearing white gloves after we pawed the windows on our last visit. Our dirty finger prints obstructed our view of the Alexa, the bag, just one of Emma Hill’s many hits since she’s toke over the helm back in 2008.
SO, HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN ALL THIS FASHION LARK?
“Art Foundation, Fashion Degree followed by 13 years in NYC.”
HOW DO YOU GET TO WHERE YOU’VE GOTTEN TOO?
“Talent, hard work and commitment. Listening to everything and not thinking you are above any tasks you’re asked of. Being kind and happy.”
WHAT’S THE POINT OF FASHION?
“To make you happy & feel good.”
DO YOU EVER STEP OUT IN YOUR OWN CREATIONS?
“Of course!! This AW11 collection really is the best so far and I want everything! I’m loving the sequined jacquard dress and cannot wait to get my hands on our Bright Cabbage green Taylor Bag!”
DIVINE INSPIRATION COMES FROM?…THE SKY?…THE TREES?
“I always start with a book or film. It could be something small such as the colours, the style of filming or even the characters. For this AW11 we were inspired by Road Dahl’s “Fantastic Mr. Fox”, along with a sense of the English countryside and the rich colours of Turner landscapes.”
ARE YOU A BONA FIDE MULTI TASKING SUPERNOVA?
“Of course – I’m a woman!”
HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN ALL ABOUT FASHION?
“Yes, totally smitten from the first day I received my box-fresh Brownies uniform!”
WHO’S YOUR MENTOR? DO YOU EVEN HAVE A MENTOR?
“Well my parents have been such a huge influence! They taught me to believe you can do anything you want to. Not to forget my son Hudson! I have a number of gorgeous typical Mulberry girls as my muses, from Kate Moss to HRH – both of which National Treasures, Romy Schneider – for her effortlessness, my god-daughter Ena… and my entire Mulberry team, who inspire me everyday!”
WHAT IS GOOD DESIGN EXACTLY?
“Something that’s effortlessly gorgeous.”
“Something that’s too try-hard.”
