Gucci Unveil Their New Dapper Dan Tailoring Campaign
After paying homage to the legendary Harlem couturier Dapper Dan with their 2018 Resort collection earlier this year, Gucci and Mr Dan are back together for their tailoring campaign – how appropriate. Renowned for his made-to-order designs that he created on a commission basis for an exclusive list of private clients in the 1980s and early 90s, Dapper Dan was sadly forced to close down his eponymous boutique in 1992. Now however, with the help of Gucci, Mr. Dan is re-opening his famous boutique in the centre of Harlem, the same neighbourhood in fact, that happens to be the setting of Gucci’s new tailoring campaign, featuring the man himself. Coincidence? We think not.
Shot by Glen Luchford, the portfolio of images portray Dapper Dan in his element: hanging out on the streets of Harlem looking dapper AF. One particularly symbolic image sees him outside the Apollo Theatre, a Harlem landmark and the historic venue that, over the years, has been graced by the likes of Duke Ellington, Aretha Franklin, The Supremes, Prince, Michael Jackson, James Brown…you get the picture, Dapper Dan has a comparable legacy in his Harlem neighbourhood and that’s what Gucci are celebrating.
