House Style: Five Centuries of Fashion at Chatsworth House

Chatsworth House

Where’s la Neophitou off to this time? She is, after all, a lady du monde, whose Alaïa booties are so well travelled they should probably think about setting up an air miles account. Not that, this time at least, said trip involved air travel, being as she was off to the great British countryside and her stately abode Chatsworth House (note: not technically hers), meaning that, in the process, she one of the first to lay eyes on the house’s very first fashion exhibition: House Style: Five Centuries of Fashion at Chatsworth House. Her carriage? The Gucci Express. Which was, admittedly, quite like a normal train albeit helmed for the day by the Italian house, the exhibition’s principal sponsor. There was one of those little food trolleys. Or so we saw on Instagram. Think Sophia ate something out of a jar. Which now is making me quite want to eat something out of a jar. Anyway. The exhibition, curated by International Vogue Editor Hamish Bowles, explores, as the name would suggest, 500 years of fashion at the house. Idea began around six years ago when the current lady of the house, Laura Burlington (and handily, ex model and fashion buyer) was looking through the attic for a Christening gown, and found a treasure trove of garments from the house’s history. Luckily, she had Hamish on speed dial (as you do), who has now laid out the exhibition in five sections – darting all the way from the clothing of Bess Hardwick, powerful lady of the 16th century to the famed Mitford sisters, alongside pieces from the last couple of decades – Stella Tennant’s Helmut Lang wedding dress, an increds Dior gown by John Galliano, as well as special gowns created by Gucci Creative Director Alessandro Michele for Lady Laura. A title and her very own custom Gucci? Ain’t she lucky.
