SOPHIA KOKOSALAKI: PORTRAIT OF THE DESIGNER

FROM THE VAULT (SUMMER 2011)

NAME: Sophia Kokosalaki.

OCCUPATION: designer.

CURRENT EMPLOYER: creative director Diesel Black Gold womenswear.

FIRST JOB IN FASHION?

“I started as a very hard-working assistant driving around Athens collecting clothes.”

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?

“After a small collection I had the support of great stylists and journalists who gave me the confidence to do a bigger collection.”

FASHION IS…

“An expression and addiction.”

DO YOU EVER WEAR YOUR OWN DESIGNS?

“All the time.”

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

“The realisation that there are so many ideas and such little time.”

CAN YOU MULTITASK?

“I am actually multitasking now…”

ARE YOU ONLY AS GOOD AS YOUR LAST COLLECTION?

“Some people yes, especially the younger ones; for some others it doesn’t matter.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE WAY MOST PEOPLE DRESS?

“I actually find it in poor taste to criticise people’s dress sense. Except if it is a daughter or boyfriend!”

HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN ALL ABOUT FASHION?

“No, not always. Until my early twenties I was mostly interested in journalism, boys and politics. In that order.”

HAVE YOU EVER LIED IN AN INTERVIEW?

“Yes, probably, but I had to.”

DO YOU HAVE A MENTOR? A MUSE? WHO/WHAT ARE THEY?

“Well, she is not exactly a mentor, but Sarah Mower is a good person for advice.”

ARE YOU A BELIEVER IN HEALTHY COMPETITION?

“Yes, certainly.”

WHAT DID YOU HAVE FOR DINNER LAST NIGHT?

“Pasta made by my friend Liz.”

CAN YOU WRAP YOUR LEGS AROUND YOUR NECK LIKE JANICE DICKINSON?

“Do I have to try now? I am walking here… ”

IF YOU COULD BE A SUPERHERO, WHICH ONE WOULD YOU BE AND WHY?

“I don’t do Lycra!”

DO YOU REMEMBER YOUR FIRST SHOW?

“Of course, and the realisation that morning when I woke up that from then on I have to do this every six months for the rest of my life… or maybe NOT.”

HAVE YOU EVER BANNED ANYONE FROM YOUR SHOW BECAUSE OF A BAD REVIEW? WOULD YOU?

“No, would never bother.”
