Artist Tom Sachs Designs An Other-Worldly Overshoe for Nike
Just in time for the premiere of First Man, an upcoming biopic based on the life of the Moon-man Neil Armstrong, American sculptor and cultural commentator Tom Sachs designed the Nike Mars Yard Overshoe. Okay, we don’t really know if the film and the shoe release dates were planned to coincide, but if not – it’s one fabulous coincidence. An homage to the world beyond the planet we live on, the Nike Mars Yard Overshoe is the latest design bridging the world of art and fashion to come out of the NikeCraft, the ongoing project between Sachs and the sportswear giant. It all started in 2012 with a collection of spacey accessories, featuring the galactic imagination of Tom Sachs and the high-performance qualities of Nike. In June 2017, he designed the second edition of the archival trainers, naming them Nike Mars Yard 2.0, and now, that trainer is getting a new look.
The Nike Mars Yard Overshoe is any-weather-condition kinda gadget. It transforms the classic Mars Yard into a shoe that will take you anywhere you need to be, despite the rain, snow or even a meteor shower. As the name suggests, it can even take you to Mars if it happens to be on your map. Combining the innovation and practicality, the Overshoe brings in Sachs’ aesthetic as a work-in-progress of creating the ideal product, showing exactly how functional an artistic idea can become if put in the right set of hands. Now we just need these in our own hands.
The Tom Sachs x Nike Mars Yard Overshoe will be launching on October 11th at Dover Street Market London, available in-store only through online raffle. Follow DSM at @doverstreetmarketlondon for more info. It will be launching online at a later date.
