Before Mr Gvasalia (and Mr Wang, Mr Ghesquiere, Mr Thimister and Mr Goma, ofc) there was Cristobal Balenciaga. And now, the master couturier, and the house that bears his name, are the subject of the V&A’s latest blockbuster exhibition, Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion, the very first retrospective of his work to be shown in the UK. It promises to, hinted by the name and confirmed by the notes, chart not only the Spanish master’s work over the years but his influence, which continues to loom large over fashion today. “Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion is the first UK exhibition to explore the work and legacy of the Spanish couturier, his protégés and contemporary designers working in the same innovative way today,” the V&A say. We are promised sketches, film, photographs, and fabric samples, and presumably lots of shiny cabinets stuffed with beautiful beautiful clothes. It begins May 27th – fashion masses assemble!
Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion will take place from May 27 2017 to February 18 2018.
