“Question: Tell me what you think about me / I buy my own diamonds and I buy my own rings / Only ring your cell-y when I’m feelin lonely / When it’s all over please get up and leave” When Destiny’s Child wrote their 1999 hit song Independent Women, I think they had the Giorgio Armani cruise 2016 girl in mind. Because, look, she is an independent woman. She buys her own culottes and she buys her own strappy heels; she buys her own python clutch bag and matching trainers, and she buys her own sequin embellished wrap skirt. When it (and by it, we assume Beyonce, Kelly and Michelle, were referring to a sexual liaison of some sort) is all over, she tells the man to get up and leave. As I say, she’s an independent, and very stylish, woman.
