Schiaparelli: Haute Couture AW16
Celestial bodies. Circus in space? Bertrand Guyon’s Elsa Schiaparelli collection was a sort of cubist reimagining of the future. And the future was bright. Bright pink. Well the carpet was on the way in, anyway, perfect for a pre-show couture mince. The whole thing, according to the press release, was a respectful homage to Elsa Schiaparelli’s famed Circus collection – think harlequin triangles, suns and moons, zodiac galaxies that expanded over floating chiffon. It was about dresses, really – fantastical, surreal concoctions that played with proportion – some raised at the shoulders, others cinched at the waist with little metal sculptures. That said, piece of the day thus far has to go to the embellished bloomers (or, as Alexander Fury wrote, couture diaper) – we didn’t know we needed such an item in our lives, but now we do. This was fantasy clothing. A perfect start to a Monday morning. Take us away to the circus, Bertrand.
