Oh, the sense of colour that Sander Lak has… It’s unlike anyone else’s in fashion right now. Like impressionist paintings that got a pop-art transformation, the Sies Marjan looks which walked the New York Fashion Week catwalk yesterday gave a whole new sense of intensity to the brand. Sander’s colour stories have already been recognised as unique, but SS19 was a whole new level. The deep aubergines and the hot reds against the sandy nudes, shining whites and even a few prints – it was a symphony of colour, effortlessly transforming layers of clothes into moving silhouettes. More romantic (yes, even the menswear) but modern as usual, this was a season of new beginnings at Sies Marjan.
And what a cast… Legendary names like Malgosia Bela, Aymeline Valade and Sasha Pivovarova joined the new generation supers like our cover queen Marjan Jonkman and Kiki Willems, as well as a number of Sander’s emotional connections. Along with his friends, his own mum walked the catwalk in a charming homage that went beyond clothes. It not only showed how real women look in these clothes, but reminded all the spectators of how much of a personal moment a catwalk presentation can be for some designers. Both visually and emotionally moving, Sies Marjan SS19 was a 2/2. Ten approves.
