Sportmax: Ready-to-wear SS19

Don’t let the name fool you. MaxMara’s younger, edgier sister might be all about that sporty life, but there’s much more to it than just trainers and tracksuits. The opening look of the Sportmax SS19 show kinda said it all. A two-piece suit with bermuda-length trousers and a cropped single-button jacket, both in just the perfect shade of greige. This everything-but-conventional tailored twinset was layered under an oversized nylon hood, worn with a bucket hat and some pretty nifty rope-y flat sandals. As soon as it came out, it reminded everyone that the “sport” part of the name doesn’t stand for gym kits. Instead, it’s about the American meaning of sportswear. Perfectly-casual daywear that can be upcycled into the evening, or downplayed for a day in the nature.

After such a strong opener, the vision for the rest of the collection was set. The looks continued effortlessly walking the line between sportswear against tailoring, with swimsuits and tailored jackets, sequins with racer backs, midi dresses embellished with reflective nylons… Perhaps this wasn’t the first time we saw the idea of sportswear translated into everyday clothes, but it was the crystal-clear vision of the two put together that made this collection stand out. The final section of the show, a set of multicoloured floor-length t-shirt dresses, was the cherry on top. An elongated silhouette with minimal details and maximal impact. As they swayed down the catwalk, we started listing all the locations we could wear these pieces to. London, Paris, Milan, New York, our back garden… Oh, the list goes on.
