Lady in red. That’s how we’d describe Valentino’s latest couture offering. Well, not just red, but put it this way – red was the take home. I mean, we’re personally struggling to see past the little red riding hood cloak and ruffle look. Suitable attire for a swift swish off on the Eurostar tomorrow? Anyway, red is dramatic. Red says grandeur. And, their latest couture offering was just those two things – a romantic flight through the world of Shakespeare (his capacity to “penetrate the human spirit,” apparently), transformed by the Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri into a modern day opus of luxury and craftsmanship. But as well as the Shakespeare stuff, there was a touch of English-ness that weaved it’s way through the whole thing – grandiose Elizabethan ruffles that sat on the neck, a touch of the Union Jack stitched into a jacket, black punk-ish boots. Safe to say we left satisfied. With that, we’re at the end of Haute Couture week. And, if that strong sniff of rumour is to be believed, it will also be Maria’s final couture collective at Valentino, before becoming Creative Director of Dior. Adieu Paris. Couture week is done. Curtain down.
