Ten Loves: Assouline’s ‘Franca: Chaos and Creation’

If today is supposed to be all about celebrating powerful women, we can’t go without mentioning a person that helped modernise the face of fashion with her work and incredibly personality. Franca Sozzani was not just the editor-in-chief of Italian Vogue from 1988 until her passing in 2016. Throughout those three decades, she was responsible for spearheading the fashion industry and constructing contemporary female representation that’s still part of the conversation today. “She was not just ahead of our time. She was ahead of our courage in so many ways,” Anna Wintour remembers the late editor, reinforcing what we all know. Fashion wouldn’t look like it does today without Franca Sozzani. A printed showcase of this notion is the latest publication to come out Assouline’s rich opus of coffee table wonders – Franca: Chaos and Creation. Looking at the groundbreaking photographic work in fashion publishing, the book serves as an album of outstanding fashion photography as well as the cultural evolution in the time she served as the editor.

Remember the Black Issue for July 2008? During her time, Sozzani collaborated with some of the most important image makers of our time on creating photographs that still look as forward-thinking and modern as they did the first time round. And now you can have all those images compiled in 408 pages, bound and in your hands. She discussed controversial subjects in glamorous ways, helped establish the idea of a Supermodel and worked with some of our favourite people – Azzedine Alaïa as well as her sister Carla Sozzani, a creative genius in her own right. This is exactly the kind of tribute that Franca Sozzani deserves. Monumental, extraordinary and absolutely fabulous – it’s Franca: Chaos and Creation.
