Bianca Saunders: Menswear Spring/ Summer 2019

There’s no denying, Bianca Saunders is a rising star of London’s fashion scene. Yes, we know it sounds like an empty cliché, but it’s true. The level of excitement that surrounded Bianca’s debut at London Fashion Week Men’s was a rarity. It’s difficult to get fashion peeps excited about something nowadays – it often feels like we’ve seen it all. But it only took a collection of eight ostensibly simple looks to cause a commotion. That’s what you call fresh talent. For her inaugural collection at LFWM, Bianca decided to further the exploration of black masculinity that she first tackled in her final MA collection at the Royal College of Art last year. Looking to her friends, Bianca took inspiration from conversations revolving around visual expectations of gender that black men experience on a daily basis. It was about looking at traditional menswear codes like white t-shirts, nylon trousers and seersucker shirts, and giving them a slightly feminine twist. Loops, holes and creases became embellishment to otherwise crisp clothes, signifying a sense of awkwardness and creating the kind of look that even after only two collections has became a distinguishing signature in the Bianca Saunders design portfolio. With this stunning debut, Bianca proved she’s the girl you should be looking out for in the coming seasons. But in the meantime, we’ll take one of everything.
