MSGM: Menswear AW18

I want to say that there’s something rather 80’s, workwear casual about the MSGM collection. It’s in the cut of the trousers. They’re that sort of dad jean shape, wider than what we’re used to from recent years, and cut straight so, and just long enough to hit the top of your shoe in an almost carrot shape, but short enough to give the appearance of stiff awkwardness. Cut high on the waist, and elasticated, they’re ever so slightly reminiscent of an Eighties, geeky tourist. You know the one. Your dad in pictures from before you were born, just minus the fanny pack round the waist. There were fanny packs here, but they were worn cross body, and those mirror ski sunglasses worn on an impossibly short piece of elastic round the neck. This was topped off with boxy, zip up, workwear inspired jackets worn over tucked in shirts, ties round necks, all adding to the sense of stiffness and awkwardness hinted at by the trousers. Could it be that Massimo Giorgetti took his cues this season from ‪Napoleon Dynamite‬? And if so, where were the llamas?
