Versace: Ready-to-Wear SS21

There’s nothing quite so thrilling as a Versace catwalk show. High octane is a signature of this house, where understatement is not in the vocabulary. In a world that’s had its stuffing knocked out by a global pandemic, a little dose of Versace glamour goes a long way.

Donatella instinctively understands this. She is the woman who once said: “Less isn’t more, it’s just less.” She knew what she had to do. The house staged a catwalk extravaganza with an Atlantis set, a cast of supers and clothes drenched in sexuality. So far so Versace, except that the audience, perched on the fallen pillars of Atlantis were not the usual A-listers and fashion editors, but Versace staffers who’d all returned negative Covid tests before taking their seats.

The rest of us watched online, from our various states of lockdown and the show was like medicine for flagging spirits: all short skirts, toned midriffs and updated riffs on Versace’s famous sea prints, which were translated onto sassy little plissé mini dresses. Frills and flounces frothed at the hems of itsy-bitsy babydolls or cascaded in extravagant waterfall trains on flamenco skirts. The slink factor was high, with jersey skirts and trousers spliced at the hip-bone. Body diverse casting showed just how good everyone can look in Versace. It was a collection full of positive energy that bounced (quite literally) down the catwalk. A long, hard Covid winter is coming but we have Versace to look forward to. The future’s bright.
