10 People To Meet Laura And Kate Mulleavy
In terms of today’s design world, increasingly concerned with the social-media spotlight as it is, the Mulleavys remain fairly mysterious characters.
Their work, on the other hand, has been speaking volumes for something close to adecade now. Making the trip to New York in 2005 with a suitcase stuffed with just a handful of garments, the duo’s art-centric aesthetic has not only won favour with the fashion elite – as a handful of some of the industry’s most prestigious awards testifies – but with the masses, too, having got successful capsule collections for both Gap and Target under their belts. Luckily, we’ve managed to coax at least a peep out of them for our round-up of LA’s finest creatives, as what would it have been without their contribution? Clearly incomplete.
How long have you lived in LA?
“Since around 1997, but we were raised in Santa Cruz, which is in Northern California, and attended UC Berkeley for college.”
Why did you move to LA?
“We moved with our parents while we were in high school.”
What’s your favourite thing to do in LA?
“See movies and hang out with friends.”
How would you define yourselves?
Why did you decide to do what you do?
“We wanted to tell stories.”
What do you do to relax?
“In the summer, it is nice to sit by the pool and listen to music.”
Is there anything you would like to do but never seem to have the time?
“We would love to organise everything in our office perfectly!”
Have you been to Disneyland? What was your favourite ride?
“Of course. Our favourites are Mr Toad’s Wild Ride and the Peter Pan ride in Fantasyland. We also love the animatronic birds in the Tiki Room.”
