A First Look At Olivier Rousteing’s Costumes For The Opéra De Paris Ballet

Bal

Male ballet dancers in tight pants alert! Some late afternoon titillation comes in the form of a very first look at Olivier Rousteing’s costumes for Sébastien Bertaud’s upcoming Renaissance ballet for Opéra De Paris. Safe to say we’re… errr excited. But let’s not go into that. Olivier’s costumes are, unsurprisingly, very pretty indeed and not at all understated. But why should they be? If I’ve learnt anything from Black Swan, ballet means DRAMA DRAMA. DRAMA. And there’s drama to be had here – regal matador-style jackets, embellished, neigh, encrusted with so many pearls and sequins it could probably fund a small principality and tights (is that the technical term?) are similarly weighted with jewels, bulging in all the correct places. Are those things stuffed? Less likely to be complimentary on our (terribly) skinny frames. And for the ladies, long-sleeved leotards covered in… you guessed it – more sequins and pearls. Fine with us. It does bring up the slightly more practical question of: can these boys and girls actually dance in this weighty get-ups? Yes, apparently. “When we tried the jacket on a dancer, he was like, ‘No, it’s fine – when I wear it, I fly with it'”. Great news.
