To all those who consider shopping their preferred kind of cardio – there’s a new gym in town. Set inside the 10,800 sq metres at 27 Old Bond Street, Alexander McQueen have set their grand new London flagship store. Scattered around the three glass-fronted floors in the heart of Mayfair, Sarah Burton’s ethereal designs find their place inside the nature-inspired space designed by architect Smiljan Radic. The McQueen fairies, in their other-worldly ruffled lace are interacting between the wooden structures, the stone-like sculptures and the oversized glass tubes. On the second floor, it’s a man’s world with the artistic tailoring getting its righteous space.
The fabulosity of the current collections aside, the second floor will host an experiential space designed to encourage the formation of a creative community. With archive pieces, photography and artwork, it’s the creative process of both Lee himself as well as the current design team comes to life. This area will also be used to host a programme of exhibitions and talks aimed specifically at the McQueens of tommorow – the students, fundamental to the future of the house and, of course, to fashion more broadly. The shine of the artificial and the beauty of the raw, it’s a world of polish and nature that exists with McQueen – and this is the window into the world. Look through and shop, you definitely won’t regret it.
