Bottega Veneta Milan Fashion Week S S 14

Designer Tomas Maier works at an eye-watering and beautiful cross current of couture (the cutting technique is second to none) and that of the avant garde. This morning’s show was a how-to guide to beautiful and thoughtful garments. Washed cotton fabrics and silk mixes were pleated like fans across the body and waists were belted with the slimmest leather – one dress and another jacket looked inside out with raw and exposed hems. It was mainly black and it was mainly based on the skills and well-practiced know how of the early ‘80s Japanese school of aesthetics – fabric manipulation. Then a jolt of plissé silk in rust – divine! Then a jolt of navy blue leather stitched on a black dress and scattered with jewels. Shoes were pointy and dainty and “lady” with a 1" heel in black leather. Chic and thoughtful, in this collection Maier calibrates both.
