Tag Heuer Are Finishing A Year of Celebrations with a Major Auction of a One-of-a-kind Monaco Timepiece
2019 has been a big year for Tag Heuer. Along with taking over the world with their masterful approach to watchmaking, the Swiss brand has been celebrating 50 years of one of the most legendary watches in their offering – the Monaco. The birthday proceedings kicked off in June when the first of five special edition Monacos launched at the Formula 1 Grand Prix in – you guessed it – Monaco! Each of the five was dedicated to a decade in which the classic square shape evolved. And as the grand finale, Tag Heuer are presenting you with the Monaco Piece d’Art. Being auctioned next Tuesday, December 10th by Philipps, a famed New York auctioning house, the one-of-a-kind watch is a restored and decorated version of the original 1969 model, featuring the Calibre 11 movement and the authentic steel bracelet.
And while there’s a clear dedication to staying as true to the 1969 edition as possible, the timepiece is a hybrid of the past and the present. “We decided to create a one-piece edition: a work of art that commemorates our icon and pays tribute to its uniqueness. We have taken original components and decorated them – something that has never been done,” explained TAG Heuer ‘s heritage director Catherine Eberlé-Devaux. All decorated by hand, the embossed parts are visible through the transparent case-back which was originally closed. To achieve the final look, the watchmakers disassembled the movement and components and worked on every part of the chronograph module individually. This included bevelling all the components and enhancing the parts with straight graining, mirror polishing functional surfaces and screw heads, as well as adding three new jewels to bring the total to 20 rubies.
Making sure the celebratory decadence benefits more than whoever gets their hands on the Monaco Piece d’Art, all the proceeds from the Game Changers watch auction this piece will be part of will be donated to the US charity United Way of New York City. As part of their dedication to improving the lives of underprivileged children and families, Tag Heuer will support the charity’s educational campaign ReadNYC. So, if you happen to have a big wad of cash in your pocket, consider spending it on a one-of-a-kimd timepiece that will not only tell your time, but also make someone else’s time a bit better.
