Ten Talks: Sean Wotherspoon On His Guess Collaboration

sean_mainSean Wotherspoon is successfully killing it. Cool collaboration after cool collaboration, the vintage street wear collector is the latest person to collaborate with Guess Jeans. The collection is all re-worked silhouettes from the Guess archives, ‘80s, ‘90s – everything we want right now. In classic Sean style it’s a whole lot of vividly good colour in hoodies, denim jackets and tracksuits. He knows what the people want. So we asked him 10 questions:

ROXY LOLA: Why did you decide to collaborate with Guess Jeans U.S.A? What felt right about this collaboration for you?

SEAN WOTHERSPOON: To give a bit of context, I was hanging out with Ian Connor when he was working with Rocky on Rocky’s ASAP Guess collaboration. Rocky and Ian were asking me for reference pieces that they could get inspiration from for their project with GUESS. This got me obsessed with the idea of curating an archive with GUESS. Since the beginning of round two we’ve always sold GUESS but never made a point of really archiving it. I then started to build a relationship with GUESS and thought it would be so cool to work with them. Then Nicolai got in touch and we were like let’s just do this.

RL: What did you discover going through the Guess Jeans U.S.A archives?

SW: I think GUESS has one of the best graphic and denim archives I’ve ever seen and I realise that 90 percent of their product has never been seen. I’m going through their archive and there are 10 years worth of capsules I could create through their archive. They have so many themes in their archive. I’m obsessed with the idea of bringing each one to life.

RL: Why do you think those silhouettes are so relevant now?

SW: They were timeless. GUESS did a great job of creating timeless product in the 80s and 90s. It’s showing now as we can recreate it and it’s so relevant.

RL: It seems you love a lot of bright vivid bold colour blocking, especially with this collection. What is it that draws you to using all this colour?

SW: I like colour in general. I’m just attracted to it. Honestly, I thought the whole clothing and fashion world was getting boring, always wearing all black, grey, navy. I’ve always loved wearing a pop of colour. I don’t wear black shoes, socks or anything ever! That’s why I did the colour, I thought hopefully I can bring colour to people’s lives and start the summer off in a bright way. I saw a guy today wearing all black with my colourful shoes. He’s now here at the pop up buying bright colours!

RL: So if you had to see the world through only one colour forevermore, which colour would you pick?

SW: Blue, no questions asked. Blue is my favourite colour and it has the best variety of colour. When you think into gradients of colour, blue has the most variants.

RL: Do you have a favourite piece in this collection?

SW: I like the backpacks and side bags. I love the blankets too. I love it all but if I had to choose that would be it.

RL: Who would you love to see wearing this collection? The ultimate Guess Jeans U.S.A Farmers Market crew consists of…

SW: Miley Cyrus, because she’s vegan.

RL: What’s the perfect playlist to go with this collection?

SW: I listen to a lot of 80’s/90’s hip-hop so that’s what I tend to picture. Also 90’s alternative rock, music that would be on in my parents car when I was younger. Also New Lil Yachty.

RL: If this collection was a feast, what food would be included? (It’s a farmer’s market pop-up after all)

SW: The most magnificent fruit and veg ever sold, across markets around the world. All organic, all vegan.

RL: What was the best part about this collaboration? What are you most proud of?

SW: Seeing happy people. I feel like if anyone has an opportunity to put themselves in a position to either make something or do something to make someone’s day, it’s just the best feeling in the world and I would highly recommend it. It’s great for personal self esteem.
