Classic Vans Trainers Get a Punk Makeover Courtesy of Vivienne Westwood
Are you more of an Old Skool or a Slip On kinda gal? Or you’re just like me and can’t choose just one? When it comes to Vans, the options are – as you must already know – endless. Making our shopping decisions and therefore lives even more difficult, Vivienne Westwood added the Californian skatewear brand to her already rich rolodex of collaborators. In a launch coming your way next Friday, September 20th, Westwood’s Anglomania line teamed up with Vans on not one, not two, but six special edition unisex trainers that merge the easy, breezy West Coast vibe with the punk spirit of World’s End.
First up, the crowd pleaser. The classic Old Skool is one of those shoes most people had in their shoe cupboards at some point, regardless of which band’s poster hung on their bedroom ceiling. A lot of us still have and wear them, possibly in a wrecked state of no repair. The Vivienne Westwood Anglomania version comes in oxblood suede with contrasting mustard stitching and rubber sole, referencing a classic Autumnal colourway. The emo-loving checkerboard Slip-On brings back Westwood’s archival Destroy graphic from 1977 in blood red. And even the signature checks are askew – this is the shoe of a rebel.
In addition to the Authentic plimsoll in a sky-blue print, the Sk8-Hi platform is having a comeback in two different variations. The black Platform references the seminal pirate boots with the tan strap going across the ankle, while the beige one features an embossed love letter from California addressed to Westwood’s 44 Conduit street boutique. It also includes the collab’s launch date, dating this fashion postcard to a moment in time. And then there’s the pièce de resistance – taken directly from the 1990s glory days of Vans, it’s the Style #53. A chunky loafer shape in black suede is embroidered with a large Vivienne Westwood multi-coloured metal orb slap bang in the middle. It’s the ultimate Westwood-maniac shoe I need in my collection. Actually, I’ll take each pair in a UK9, thank you very much.
The Vivienne Westwood Anglomania x Vans collection is launch online and in selected store on September 20th.
