A.W.A.K.E Mode: Ready-to-wear AW20
We know the Oscars have been and gone but it’s time to turn your attention to a brand-spanking-new feature-length. In the director’s chair is Natalia Alaverdian, forming her latest A.W.A.K.E Mode collection around an imaginable film plot based on a “soviet aerobics class sent to space.” Quite the concept, don’t you think?
With the opening credits soundtracked to Joy Division’s Atmosphere, futuristic cuts meshed with deconstructed tailoring techniques to envision a wardrobe that could easily be flaunted in a galaxy far away. From the holographic body-con that ran across the torso and over the head, to silver pleating and the array of felty cubed coats that appeared clunky as they moved, Alaverdian’s vision on how the women of today should dress is light-years ahead. Just take the tailoring. Grey blazers were sliced with a deft hand to expose the inner structure whilst simultaneously creating entirely new silhouettes in the process. These ace staples were paired with fringed heels that danced like corals, as well as ruched bags that appeared firm and rugged like a builder’s toolbox. Think of this as an incite into how the it girls would dress on board of the Millennium Falcon.
