Chromat: Ready-to-Wear AW20
Ladies, gents and everyone in between – we bring you the Chromat 2020 Olympic team. Don’t they look phenomenal? A true champion of inclusivity, founder of the Miami-based bodywear line, Becca McCharen-Tran took to Instagram this week to challenge the body modifications intersex and non-binary athletes have to undergo if they want to compete in athletic events. A “protest of the stringent and exclusionary gender binary” of contemporary sporting events, AW20 “reimagines athletics as a gender-inclusive space where athletes can compete as they are,” wrote McCharen-Tran.
Led by Trans model and activist Carmen Carrera, Chromat’s teammates dazzled in gradient reds, yellows and aqua blues. Vivid, form-fitting and laden in gorgeous swirls and waves – Chromat’s sportswear is a spectacle even without any actual sport involved. The brand’s ongoing collaboration with Reebok introduced one-legged leotards, trainers in Spring Breakers–esque neons and popper trackies. The latter swung low, worn over bikinis like a 2000s clubber trawling Miami beach in the earliest hours of the morning. That’s the beauty with this brand. Whether you’re into athletics or not, these clothes are transferable to any sort of environment, fit for all races, genders, sexualities and body types. Team Chromat is going for gold.
