Etro: Ready-to-Wear SS21
Although one of only a handful of Italian brands who opted to hold a physical show in Milan this week, Veronica Etro was in the majority by designing and dedicating the collection to Italy. There is a very palpable sense of national pride in Italy right now and for these Lombardy-based designers, in particular, that fashion week is even taking place.
Gathered amongst lemon trees in a warehouse east of the centre (relocated from the gardens of the Four Seasons Hotel thanks to a downpour un-facilitating of a supposed-to-be sun-drenched spring/summer collection), Etro took us to the country’s most prestigious summer hotspots. Bermuda shorts and nautical knits for a beach club in Positano, check; retro beachwear and matching short shorts for a jaunt around Amalfi, check; oversized twisted shirts over swimsuits, for watching the sunset on board your chartered boat in Ischia, check; and silk button-up day dresses for arriving back into port and hitting up the Aperitivo, check.
It was a joyously positive outing from the brand and 100% Made in Italy to celebrate its beloved home. Big straw hats and bags celebrated the woven basketry tradition found the country; embroidered t-shirts and layered beaded necklaces conjured the kind of souvenir tees and trinkets you find along the promenades of seaside resorts; gold jewels – the kind you see glistening next to coral and turquoise in the windows of high-end boutiques on Capri – frosted most looks; while a ravishing Ashley Graham swept through the venue in a black silk dress a la one of the country’s most famed style icons, Sophia Loren.
