Kiko Kostadinov: Ready-to-Wear SS19
There’s something extremely brave about a young, emerging designer giving the reins to his first ever womenswear collection to two grads fresh out of uni. Kiko Kostadinov did just that. For the London Fashion Week debut of his women’s collection, he enlisted Aussie twins and recent Central Saint Martins MA graduates Leanne and Deanna Fanning as the head designers of the new line. A brave, perhaps crazy move that absolutely payed off. For SS19, the Fannings created a collection that emulated the spirit of Kiko’s men’s universe, but added their own stamp, giving his techy tribes a feminine touch. They were inspired by Aldous Huxley’s 1932 dystopian novel Brave New World, but instead of the colourless uniformity, they recreated the uniforms splashed with a literal rainbow of colours.
The highlight of the collection were definitely the knits. Ribbed, bodycon, lurex knits powered against the anarchy of tradition. Futuristic, but absolutely now – they are definitely going to be one of the bestsellers and have a potential to become their signature. Shoes, created in collaboration with Camper, were delightfully weird and gave the looks a touch of psychedelic Barbarella. And yes – thankfully they are actually going into production. It’s official – Kiko Kostadinov is not an emerging designer. The name stands for a brand you need to look out for.
