Opening Ceremony: Ready-to-wear SS17

Pageant of the People. That was the idea behind Opening Ceremony’s SS17 presentation. Think of it as a sort of pageant, hosted by Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein of Portlandia, asking models Miss World style questions as they took to the runway. The difference being that the questions weren’t along the lines of, “if you had a magic wand, what is the one thing you would ask for and why?”, but more along the lines of “why is voting important?”. And the models weren’t all models, but rather a host of individual women from Natasha Lyonne and Rashida Jones to Whoopi Goldberg, who out it best when she replied, “if you don’t vote you can’t bitch.” But enough of that and onto the clothes. Think a 1920’s cruise wardrobe. There was a nautical element to this, with a slightly dark, almost gothic undertone. A Sailor Moon collar with a Lydia Deetz ruffle. Lines were long and lean and ended with a kicky hem in a fresh feeling palette of blue and white and black, with extra punch coming from bright horizontal stripes.
