Rick Owens is always good but this show was off the scale excellent. Rick took us to unexpected places. There was colour! And huge gothic Cinderella gowns, and feather trimmed boots, and fluttering capes. Most of all there was a Rick Owens ‘Fuck You’ defiance to it all, which given the general awfulness of the news felt like a shot in the arm.
The first looks out – a set of chewing gum white ensembles, cleansed the palette then, bam! Fuchsia pink, Pagoda shoulder jackets and babydoll dresses, worn with Owens’ block heeled platforms thigh highs. That was followed by sunshine yellow draped dresses and an enormous raspberry coloured tulle gown. We’ve never seen Rick do this kind of couture volume and it was thrilling. The dark side of Disney, there was nothing saccharine about his princess dresses. Each look exuded ultra confidence. The message? Be more Rick. It really is the only option. Everything else smacks of compromise.
